In 1807 Napolean l ordered the making of this bridge across the Seine river as a tribute to his victory in the battle of Jena in 1806. The bridge was constructed over 6 years starting in 1808.

It spans the river with five arches, imperial eagles between each of the arches and then in 1853 four warriors. The four were sculpted each representing the Roman, Greek, Arab and Gallic warrior. This painting is of the Left Bank and so showing the Arab warrior by Jean-Jacques Feuchère and the Greek warrior by François Devault.
